HARRISONBURG, Va., Sept. 7, 2009 - The James Madison University football team opens its 2009 season Saturday (Sept. 12) at Maryland.
The game at Capital One Field at Byrd Stadium will be televised on ESPN 360 and will begin at 6 p.m.
While the Dukes will be opening their season, Maryland is coming off a 52-13 loss last Saturday (Sept. 5) at nationally ranked California.
JMU and Maryland have met only once in football with the Terrapins scoring a 23-15 victory on their home field in both teams' 1998 openers. The 1998 season was JMU's last under Coach Alex Wood and the season before Coach Mickey Matthews assumed leadership of the JMU program.
The game with Maryland will be the third-straight season-opener against a Football Bowl Subdivision opponent for JMU. The Dukes lost 37-14 at North Carolina in their 2007 opener and 31-7 a year ago when they opened at Duke.
JMU is coming off a 12-2 season in 2008 and was ranked sixth nationally in preseason polls by The Sports Network and the Football Championship Subdivision coaches.
The Dukes last season won the Colonial Athletic Association title with an 8-0 league and were the top seed for the FCS playoffs. Last season's playoff appearance was JMU's third straight and its fourth in five years.
JMU has a 49-15 record during the last five seasons.
