  • Yao Ming, the 7 foot 5 inch center from China, uses a translator that graduated from JMU! Colin Pine, who graduated from JMU in 1996, helps to translate for Yao during practices, time-outs on the court, and during press conferences with reporters.

  • JMU’s first football team was formed in 1972 and only had 30 players! Their first game was played in the pouring rain on the field next to Godwin Hall. Unfortunately, they lost and didn’t score a point all season.

  • The Dukes became the first in NCAA history to win the National Football Championship after three playoff games on the road in 2004.


  • JMU got the name “Dukes” in 1947 when the first men’s basketball team was formed. The promised the then JMU President, Samuel P. Duke, they would name their team after him in exchange for basketball equipment and towels.

  • In 2004 Duke Dog was names as part of the All-American Mascot Team! In an online vote, Duke Dog was voted the most popular mascot in the country, thanks to the thousands of votes from JMU students!
