HARRISONBURG, Va., April 12, 2008 – Rising senior quarterback Rodney Landers (Virginia Beach, Va./Tallwood) ran for two touchdowns and rising sophomore fullback Donnell Brown (Chesapeake, Va./Hickory) had a scoring run to highlight a James Madison football scrimmage at Bridgeforth Stadium/Zane Showker Field Saturday.
Landers had scoring runs of two and 22 yards, and Brown scored from one yard as the Dukes completed their third week of spring drills. JMU will practice three times next week before completing its spring practice period with its annual spring game next Saturday (April 19).
The Dukes' spring game is scheduled for 1 p.m. next Saturday at Bridgeforth Stadium/Zane Showker Field. Gates for next Saturday's activities will open at noon. JMU's game-day inflatable games will be in use, and ticket and other information regarding the Dukes' 2008 season will be available.
There will be no admission charge for the JMU spring game.
In Saturday's scrimmage, Landers capped the first offense's initial series with his two-yard scoring run and added his second touchdown at the end of a short-yardage possession.
The first drive covered 75 yards in 12 plays, and Landers connected on passes of three yards to rising sophomore tailback Jamal Sullivan (Ruther Glen, Va./Caroline) and 18 yards to rising sophomore tailback Scott Noble (Baltimore, Md./Franklin). Noble also ran three times for 18 yards during the series.
Landers' 22-yard scoring run capped a 25-yard series during which the first offense overcame a holding penalty. Landers also had a six-yard run and a seven-yard completion during the series.
Brown's touchdown came with the second offense and capped an eight-play, 25-yard series. Red-shirt freshman tailback Jonathan Rose (Amherst, Va./Amherst) set up the score with three carries for 16 yards to the two-yard line. The defense then kept Rose out of the end zone on two tries before Brown scored on third down.
The Dukes also got successful field goal attempts from rising senior Dave Stannard (Midlothian, Va./Clover Hill) and redshirt freshman Dixon Wright (Crossnore, N.C./Avery County). Stannard connected from 28 yards and at the end of a nine-play, 39-yard series, and Wright hit from 28 yards at the end of a seven-play, 39-yard drive.
Landers hit on seven of 10 passes for 62 yards during the open scrimmage, and rising sophomore quarterback Drew Dudzik (Clifton, Va./Centreville) hit on six of nine for 45 yards. Landers ran 13 times for 51 yards and Dudzik 11 times for 47 yards (with the quarterbacks not being tackled but their progress marked at assumed end-of-play positions).
Noble ran six times for 39 yards, Rose nine times for 36 yards, freshman tailback Corwin Acker seven times for 27 yards, Sullivan six times for 21 yards and sophomore tailback Deric Dudinski (Sterling, Va./Park View) four times for 19 yards.
Nine players had receptions, including four receivers with two each – Noble, rising sophomore wide receiver Marcus Turner (Berlin, N.J./Eastern), Sullivan and redshirt freshman Mike Allen (Powhatan, Va./Blessed Sacrament Huguenot).
