HARRISONBURG, Va., Aug. 22, 2007 – Redshirt freshman quarterback Drew Dudzik (Clifton, Va./Centreville, Va.) ran for a touchdown to highlight a James Madison University football scrimmage Wednesday at Bridgeforth Stadium/Zane Showker Field.
Dudzik, directing the Dukes' second offensive unit against the team's second group of defenders, scored from eight yards at the end of an 80-yard, 14-play series. Dudzik had runs of 15 and eight yards and hit sophomore tailback Reggie Hicks (Kittrell, N.C./Southern Vance) and sophomore fullback Trae Kenney (Richmond, Va./Hermitage) with short passes earlier during the drive.
Dudzik was credited with 37 rushing yards on six carries overall, and he completed six of seven passes for 67 yards. Most of the passing yards came on a 50-yard completion to sophomore wide receiver Marcus Charity (Richmond, Va./Varina).
Other highlights of the late afternoon scrimmage included sophomore wide receiver Bosco Williams (Clifton Forge/Alleghany) catching six passes, all from junior quarterback Rodney Landers (Virginia Beach,Va./Tallwood). Williams' catches went for 47 yards, and Landers hit on seven of 14 attempts for 61 yards.
Landers connected on his first six passes and led the first offensive group as far as the seven-yard line during an early possession before the Dukes failed to convert on a field goal attempt.
JMU is in its third week of preseason preparations and will open the 2007 season Sept. 1 in a 6 p.m. game at North Carolina. The Dukes play at home for the first time during the upcoming season Sept. 8 in a 3:30 p.m. contest against New Hampshire.
The game at North Carolina will be available for viewing through ESPN's 360 service, and the New Hampshire game will be televised by regional cable affiliate CN8. The Sept. 8 game will be JMU's Colonial Athletic Association opener.
