 Game Notes:

  • The Dukes look to go 10-0 in CAA play as they take on the Seahawks for the second time this season.  They defeated UNCW 77-41 in Wilmington, N.C., on Jan. 26.
  • Currently on a nine-game win-streak, JMU is off to its best start to CAA play since the 2006-07 season (15-0 start).
  • Senior Kirby Burkholder is the reigning CAA Player of the Week, the fifth time this season, after averaging 20.7 points and 9.7 rebounds per game last week.  She also moved into 10th on JMU’s all-time scoring list in Sunday’s win over Towson (1,421 career points).
  • The Seahawks are currently on a five-game losing-streak, which started with their loss to the Dukes. In conference play, they are averaging 48.4 points per game with a -13.6 scoring margin.

 Game Notes:

  • The Dukes got off to a 1-4 start after playing in the Red & Black Showcase in Athens, Ga., last weekend. They picked up a win over Winthrop while dropping two decisions to No. 23/21 Georgia and losing once each to Winthrop and North Texas.
  • Florida A&M is 0-5 on the season after playing in the Mercer Invitational in Macon, Ga., a week ago. The Rattlers dropped games two games each to Eastern Kentucky and Samford and fell once to Mercer.
  • This is the third meeting between the Dukes and Rattlers. Each team has won one of the previous meetings after the teams squared off in a doubleheader at Florida A&M in 2010. The Dukes won their game 7-4 while dropping a 5-3 decision.

 Game Notes:

  • Sophomore pitcher Jailyn Ford (Hot Springs, Va./Bath County) was named the Colonial Athletic Association Pitcher of the Week for her performance at last week’s Red and Black Showcase.
  • Ford tossed her 10th career shutout in a 1-0 win over Winthrop. For the weekend, she was 1-2 with a 1.03 ERA and 23 strikeouts in 20 1/3 innings pitched.
  • Middle Tennessee got off to a 1-4 start after playing in last week’s Troy Subway Invitational. The Blue Raiders dropped decisions to Kennesaw State, Memphis, North Florida and Alabama and picked up a win over Northwestern State.
  • JMU and MTSU had the series’ only two meetings a year ago. The Dukes took both games from the Blue Raiders, winning 8-2 and 13-0 in a tournament at Coastal Carolina.

  • The Dukes enter the new campaign picked to finish sixth in the CAA after a sixth-place finish last year.
  • Head coach Spanky McFarland enters his 17th season at the helm of the Dukes and is opposed by ninth-year skipper Billy Godwin of ECU
  • Sophomore right-hander Mark Gunst will take the hill for the first pitch of 2014 after going 1-1 with a 5.13 ERA a year ago.
  • Gunst will be opposed by right-hander Jeff Hoffman, a projected high Major League draft pick after posting a 3.20 ERA with 84 strikeouts

 Game Notes:

  • This weekend’s Cavalier Invitational is a final tune up meet for James Madison as it prepares for the upcoming Colonial Athletic Association Championships (Feb. 26-March 1) in College Park, Md.
  • The swimming team has been off since participating in a double-dual meet at Pittsburgh on Jan. 18. The Dukes downed Denison 216-84 in the meet, but feel to Pittsburgh 167-133.
  • The diving Dukes were back in action last weekend at the Clemson Diving Invitational against Clemson and Davidson. Freshman Olivia Lehman (Dayton, Ohio/Centreville) won the one-meter board in Clemson, recording a career-best score and qualifying for the NCAA Zone meet.
  • Redshirt freshman Taryn McLaughlin (Hudson, Ohio/Hudson) was the Dukes top finisher on the three-meter board, placing third.

  • JMU and UNCW are set to play for the second time this season. The Dukes won the first contest 60-55 on the road. 
  • UNCW has a game prior to JMU as it will host Northeastern on Thursday. The Seahawks are coming off a 66-53 home win over Towson for their first win in conference play.
  • The Dukes travelled to Delaware on Wednesday night and lost 81-65 to the Blue Hens, who remained unbeaten in the CAA.
  • Freshman Yohanny Dalembert had a breakout game against Delaware, posting a double-double of 15 points and 13 rebounds.

 Game Notes:

  • JMU lacrosse opens the 2014 season with Virginia Tech at home.  In the Dukes’ last meeting with the Hokies, JMU picked up the 9-8 win in Blacksburg, Va.  Junior attacker Stephanie Finley posted the game-winning goal with 1:33 remaining in the game.
  • The Dukes, who open the season receiving votes in the IWLCA Week 1 Division I poll, were picked to finish second in the CAA by a preseason vote by league coaches.  In the same vote, four Dukes found their way onto the 2014 preseason All-CAA squad: senior attacker Amy Roguski, junior midfielder Ali Curwin, junior defender Lexi Cross and junior goalkeeper Schylar Healy.
  • Saturday marks Virginia Tech’s season opener as well.  The Hokies, who received votes in the IWLCA Preseason Poll, were picked to finish eighth in the ACC this season.

 Game Notes:

  • JMU had nine freshman making their collegiate debuts last weekend, including four players record their first collegiate hits. Outfielders Mimi Morris (Kenilworth, Ill./New Trier), Taylor Newton (Bradenton, Fla./Lakewood Ranch) and Tahli Moore (Sydney, Australia/Loreto Normanhurst College) and third baseman Madyson Moran (Taylor Mill, Ky./Holy Cross) started all five games for the Dukes.
  • The Flames enter the weekend with a 1-4 record after playing in the Total Control Sports Invitational in Rosemont, Ill., last week. They dropped games to Illinois, Central Michigan, Loyola and Western Illinois while picking up a win over Eastern Illinois in the three-day event.
  • This is the first meeting between JMU and UIC.

 Game Notes:

  • Sophomore second baseman Hannah Hayes (LaCrosse, Va./Kenston Forest) was the top offensive performer for the Dukes a week ago. She hit .400 with a pair of doubles and a run scored. She also walked twice and stole a base. The second-year Duke reached base safely in all five games.
  • Jailyn Ford and Tahli Moore tied Hayes for the team-lead with four hits apiece.
  • The Knights are 3-0 after hosting their first home tournament of the year a week ago. They picked up wins over LIU Brooklyn, Kansas and Fordham
  • This is the first meeting between James Madison and Central Florida.

 Game Notes:

  • JMU enters the season with two preseason All-Americans in junior outfielder Chad Carroll and senior second baseman Conner Brown.
  • Carroll was a Third Team honoree from the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association and preseason Co-Player of the Year in the CAA after ranking third in the league in 2013 with a .389 average and second nationally with eight triples.
  • Brown was a Second Team honoree from Collegiate Baseball after leading the Dukes with nine home runs last year while batting .341 with 47 RBIs.
  • Junior right-hander Chris Huffman, rated as a top five prospect in the CAA by multiple baseball publications, moves from closer to starter to take the hill for the Dukes. He had eight saves and 42 strikeouts in 55 1/3 innings last year.
  • David Lucroy takes the hill for the Pirates in game two after sporting a 2.49 ERA and 82 strikeouts last year.

  • The Dukes went 1-1 last weekend, picking up a 4-3 victory at Navy (Feb. 8) before falling 5-2 at UMBC (Feb. 9).
  • Freshman Rachel Nelson is undefeated (3-0) in singles-play dual-matches, all of which she won in two sets. After opening the spring at the No. 6 singles position, she moved into the No. 4 singles position last weekend.
  • The Patriots, a former CAA foe, have opened the 2014 spring slate 0-3.  They most recently fell 5-2 to Towson on Feb. 9, another member of the CAA.  Mason’s lone points against the Tigers came from their No. 1 and 2 singles positions.

 Game Notes:

  • The top of the JMU order is boosted by a pair of returning seniors, each four-year starters. Third baseman Ty McFarland ranked second in the CAA with 45 walks last year, trailing only teammate Johnny Bladel. McFarland hit .339 with 42 RBIs.
  • Fifth-year senior Matt Tenaglia returns at first base after hitting .303 with 37 RBIs last year.
  • ECU leads the all-time series 47-23 as the teams were formerly conference mates in the CAA until 2001. The teams last met in 2010 when a 11-5 JMU victory gave Spanky McFarland his 400th career victory with the Dukes.
  • JMU will start junior Patrick Toohers on Sunday as the right-hander enters his third season as a weekend starter for the Dukes after logging 71 innings last year.
  • The Pirates will counter with right-hander Ryan Williams, who was 6-2 with a 4.50 ERA in 96 innings last year.

  • Freshman right-hander Kelly Wishard (Hillsborough, N.J./Hillsborough) pitched five innings in her first weekend of work with the Dukes. She limited opponents to a .286 batting average against.
  • Joining Hayes as the only Dukes to college extra-base hits last weekend were Newton with a pair of doubles, senior utility Catherine Clavin (Poquoson, Va./Poquoson) with a double and sophomore catcher Erica Field (Manassas, Va./Osbourn Park) with a triple.
  • MacKenzie Audas and Shelby Turner are the Knight’s top two pitchers. Audas tossed a shutout in UCF’s win over Kansas. She struck out 10 and limited the Jayhawks to two hits. Turner went 1-0 with a win over LIU Brooklyn. She struck out six and did not walk a batter in seven innings of work.

  • The Dukes are winning conference games by an average of 28.7 points per game.  Through nine CAA games, they have trailed for just 12 minutes, 58 seconds out of 360 minutes of action (3.6% of CAA minutes).
  • Nationally, Drexel ranks third in turnovers per game (11.5), seventh in assist-to-turnover ratio (1.38) and 10th in scoring defense (55.9 ppg).  JMU ranks fourth in field-goal percentage defense (0.344), sixth in 3-point field-goal defense (0.251), seventh in blocks per game (6.0) and ninth in rebound margin (+10.5), scoring defense (55.7 ppg) and scoring margin (+19.5).
