HARRISONBURG, Va., Feb. 10, 2014 – James Madison senior guard Kirby Burkholder (Bridgewater, Va./Turner Ashby) is the Colonial Athletic Association Player of the Week as announced by the league on Monday. This is the fifth time this season that Burkholder has claimed the conference honor and the seventh time it has gone to a JMU player.
Burkholder averaged a team-best 20.7 points per game and grabbed 9.7 rebounds per outing to lead the Dukes to a 3-0 mark last week. She shot 44.4-percent from the field, including 41.9-percent from 3-point range and was good on 9 of her 10 free throw attempts. The senior also contributed seven assists, 10 steals and a block in an average of 35.3 minutes per game.
Burkholder opened the week with 16 points, nine rebounds and three steals in a win at William & Mary. She hit on four of her seven 3-point shots in the game. She followed that performance with 30 points, eight rebounds, four steals and two assists against Northeastern. It was the second time this season the Preseason CAA Player of the Year scored 30 or more points.
The Dukes final game of the week saw Burkholder pour in 16 points and 12 rebounds against Towson for her seventh double-double of the season. She chipped in four assists, three steals and a block as well.
The College of Charleston’s Bre Bolden joined Burkholder in the weekly honors after being named the CAA Rookie of the Week.
The Dukes close out their three-game home stand on Thursday as they play host to UNCW for a 7 p.m. at the Convocation Center.
