HARRISONBURG, Va., Dec. 5, 2013 – Two James Madison women’s soccer players were selected to the 2013 NSCAA/Continental Tire NCAA Division I All-Mid-Atlantic Region Team, released by the National Soccer Coaches Association of America on Wednesday. Senior Becky Sparks (Laurel Springs, N.J./Paul VI) earned a spot on the first team, while freshman Ashley Herndon (Ashburn, Va./Stone Bridge) landed on the third team.
Sparks anchored a JMU defense that allowed just 21 goals in 19 games during the regular season, including a league-low seven goals in eight CAA contests. The senior defender also contributed offensively for the Dukes by scoring three goals and tying for the team lead with seven assists.
Herndon made an immediate impact for JMU, ranking second on the squad with 19 points, tallying six goals and seven assists. The freshman also scored four game-winning goals, which was tied for the second-most in the CAA. Herndon contributed either a goal or an assist in nine of JMU’s 19 matches during the regular season, including five of the Dukes’ nine conference contests.
Sparks and Herndon helped lead the charge as JMU recorded its first-ever outright CAA regular season title. Including the postseason, the Dukes finished 15-5-1 and advanced to the conference championship game.
