BLACKSBURG, Va., Oct. 19, 2013 – Sophomore Robert Stirling (Caboolture, Australia/St. Columbans College) turned in a solid showing against seventh-seeded Andreas Bjerrehus (Virginia Tech) before falling in three sets in the second round of the ITA Atlantic Regional on Saturday.
Stirling rolled to a 6-1 win in the first set, but Bjerrehus, the 66th-ranked player in the ITA preseason rankings, bounced back with 6-3 and 6-1 wins in the final two sets. Stirling was the first player to push Bjerrehus to three sets in his seven wins this fall.
The Dukes’ doubles team of freshmen Sebastian Salinas (Merida, Mexico/Preparatoria Abierta SEP) and Brett Moorhead (Midlothian, Va./Cosby) also played well against a seeded opponent, dropping their second-round match to eighth-seeded Ryan Shane and Jordan Daigle (Virginia), 8-5.
Salinas posted a win in singles play on the third day of competition, beating Duquesne’s Max Rubin, 6-2, 6-4, in the consolation bracket. He will take on another Duquesne player, Rich Robbie, in the next round.
Sunday’s matches begin at 10 a.m. with the quarterfinal round of doubles. Two rounds of singles will follow.
