BLACKSBURG, Va., Oct. 18, 2013 - Sophomore Robert Stirling (Caboolture, Australia/St. Columbans College) won his opening match at the ITA Atlantic Regional on Friday, defeating Bucknell's Nick Bybel in straight sets.
Stirling beat Bybel by scores of 6-4, 6-2, picking up his first win of the season. He advances to the second round, where he will play seventh-seeded Andreas Bjerrehus (Virginia Tech) on Saturday. Bjerrehus was tabbed 66th in the ITA preseason rankings.
Freshmen Sebastian Salinas (Merida, Mexico/Preparatoria Abierta SEP) and Brett Moorhead (Midlothian, Va./Cosby) teamed up for a win in the first round of doubles play. They notched their win by a score of 8-6 over Virginia Tech's Nicholas Wilson and Rafael Ribas. It was the second win of the season for Salinas and Moorhead, who will play eighth-seeded Jordan Daigle and Ryan Shane (Virginia) on Saturday.
Play will resume Saturday at 9 a.m. and will include two rounds of doubles and one round of singles.
