LYNCHBURG, Va., Sept. 14, 2013 – James Madison women’s tennis notched six singles victories on Friday and advanced to the final round in two of three doubles flights on day one of the Liberty Fall Classic.

Freshmen Alex Huie (Woodlands, Texas/Woodlands) and Rachel Nelson (Big Prairie, Ohio/West Holmes) picked up their first collegiate wins in singles on Friday, as Huie defeated Norfolk State’s Andrea Macchiavello in two sets (6-1, 6-0) in Flight ‘1’ and Nelson took down Norfolk State’s Yvonne Kamegne in two sets (6-2, 6-2) in Flight ‘4’.

Both Huie and Nelson also added doubles victories to their day, advancing to the final round of their respective flights with their partners.  Huie partnered with junior Taylor Pinchoff (Sylvan Lake, Mich./West Bloomfield) in the Flight ‘1’ bracket to defeat Liza Gordeeva and Macchiavello (Norfolk State) 8-3 in the quarterfinals before battling for the 8-5 semifinal win over Belen Rivera and Brittany Yang (Liberty).

Nelson paired with senior Jacqueline Palmucci (Aurora, Colo./Cherokee Trail) in the Flight ‘3’ doubles bracket.  In the quarterfinals, they dispatched Rebecca Harris and Laura Ramthun (Virginia Tech) 8-1 and, in the semifinals, they knocked off Kamegne and Maralda Lhorca (Norfolk State) 8-2.

Fellow freshman Emily Bradshaw (Mississauga, Ontario, Canada/Blyth Academy) was forced to withdraw from her Flight ‘3’ singles quarterfinal match due to illness as well as her Flight ‘2’ doubles matches with sophomore Cara Wirth (Reading, Pa./Wilson High School).  Wirth started off her sophomore campaign with a 6-0, 6-2 win over Radford’s Bethany Law in Flight ‘6’ singles.

In Flight ‘1’ singles, Pinchoff won 6-2, 6-3 over Longwood’s Malin Allgurin and, in Flight ‘2’ singles, Palmucci defeated Gordeeva (NSU) in two sets (7-5, 6-4).

Both redshirt junior Sarah Khan (Islamabad, Pakistan/Overseas Pakistani Foundation College (New Mexico)) and senior Ruxandra Andriescu (Brampton, Ontario, Canada/Turner Fenton) started off the 2013 season with two-set shut-outs in singles play as Khan took down Norfolk State’s Ana Popovic in the Flight ‘5’ quarterfinals and Andriescu won against Radford’s Taylor Fay in the Flight ‘7’ quarterfinals.

Khan and Andriescu paired up in the Flight ‘3’ doubles bracket and fell 8-3 to Radford’s Napolitano and Grace Sarver in the quarterfinal round.  After moving to the consolation bracket, the duo claimed an 8-3 win over Longwood’s Paloma Alatorre and Mason Thomas.  With a bye through the consolation semifinals, they advanced to the Flight ‘3’ doubles consolation final match.
