Men's Golf Holds On To Lead After 36 Holes of Golfweek Program Challenge

MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. – The James Madison men’s golf team posted its second straight under-par team round and held on to a one-stroke lead through 36 holes of the 2013 Golfweek Program Challenge, Sept. 9. The three-day, 54-hole tournament is being played at True Blue Plantation in Pawleys Island, S.C.

Starting with a four-shot lead on the day, the Dukes were able to post a 4-under 284 and has a two-round score of 12-under 564. JMU has a slim one-shot lead over IUPUI, who posted an 8-under 280 and is at 11-under 565. Akron is third at 5-under 571, with Jacksonville State at 2-under 574 and Old Dominion at 1-under 575 to round out the top five teams.

Junior Trey Smith (Virginia Beach, Va./Kellam) shot another stellar round, this time a 5-under 67 on one eagle, four birdies and no bogeys, to move into third at 8-under 136. Freshman Poom Pattaropong (Minburi, Bangkok, Thailand) slipped in the second round with a 2-over 74 but is still tied for sixth at 3-under 141. Junior Jon Weiss (Florence, S.C.) made an eight-stroke improvement from his first round and recorded five birdies and just one bogey for a 4-under 68 and a two-round score of even-par 144, good for a tie for 17th. Freshman Ryan Cole (Mount Airy, Md.) is tied with teammate  sophomore Tyler Williams (Hilton Head Island, S.C./Hilton Head Prep) with a score of 5-over 149. Cole shot a 3-over 75 in the second round while Williams had a 7-over 79.

Western Carolina’s J.T. Poston and Peter Webb of Valparaiso are tied for the individual lead at 9-under 135, one shot ahead of Smith.

The Dukes will go for the tournament title, starting off No. 1 at 8:15 tomorrow morning in the final round, playing with IUPUI and Akron.
