HARRISONBURG, Va., Aug. 30, 2013 - Sophomore Daniel Roppert connected on a penalty kick opportunity with three minutes remaining in the second overtime to lift James Madison to a 2-1 victory over Fordham in the 2013 men's soccer season opener for both teams on Friday night at University Park.
Roppert's game-winner was the first goal of his career as he played in just three games as a freshman. The late score gave the Dukes three straight wins in overtime games, dating back to last season.
James Madison struck first in the game, taking a 1-0 lead on senior Adam Bastidas's goal in the 22nd minute. The goal was set up junior Steven Mashinski, who delivered a nice pass to give Bastidas an opportunity in front of the net.
The Dukes lead was short-lived as Fordham tied it up five minutes later on an impressive goal by Andrew Hickey. The freshman was able to hit the far corner of the net with his corner kick for the unassisted score.
The two teams battled to a scoreless tie for the remainder of regulation and the first overtime period. Roppert finally ended a scoring drought of over 80 minutes with the game-winner.
Kyle Morton improved to 1-0 in goal for the Dukes, making one save. The sophomore improved to 6-2-1 for his career.
JMU will host Binghamton at 2:30 p.m. on Sunday in the second day of the 2013 Fairfield by Marriott JMU Invitational.
