HARRISONBURG, Va., April 22, 2013 – James Madison cross country/track & field seniors Katie Gorman (Lafayette Hill, Pa./Plymouth-Whitemarsh) and Katie Harman (Clarksville, Md./River Hill) were named finalists for two of JMU athletics’ top honors Monday night at the annual JMU Student-Athlete Awards Banquet. Gorman was recognized as a finalist for the Gary ’81 & Fredericka (Cookie) McCollum JMU Female Scholar-Athlete of the Year award, and Harman was tabbed as a finalist for Female Athlete of the Year honors.
In the fall, Gorman earned the Colonial Athletic Association’s Scholar-Athlete of the Year award for cross country. On the cross country course, she won two individual meet titles as a senior, including the Eastern College Athletic Conference cross country championships. She is currently qualified to compete in the 3,000-meter and 10,000-meter runs at the ECAC outdoor track & field championships. The kinesiology major notched five CAA Commissioner’s Academic Awards, earned JMU Athletic Director Scholar-Athlete honors three times and was named to the VaSID Academic All-State Team as a junior.
Harman earned JMU Female Athlete of the Year honors in 2011 as a sophomore. Since then, she has been honored as a 2012 Division I Women’s Cross Country All-Academic team member by the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association, a two-time All-Region cross country athlete by the USTFCCCA, and All-CAA in both cross country and track & field. A Dean’s List student majoring in health sciences, she also has earned VaSID Academic All-State honors and CAA Scholar-Athlete honors. As a junior, she was a three-time CAA champion: cross country, outdoor 1,500-meter run and outdoor 5,000-meter run. She is currently qualified for the ECACs in the 1,500-meter run, 5,000-meter run and 4x800-meter relay.
Gorman was a finalist for female scholar-athlete with Kirby Burkholder (women’s basketball), Rachel Wein (field hockey) and Katherine Bulling (women’s tennis). Bulling was named the Gary ’81 & Fredericka (Cookie) McCollum JMU Female Scholar-Athlete of the Year.
For JMU Female Athlete of the Year, Harman was joined by Ashley Burnham (softball), Eva Hannesdottir (swimming & diving) and Casey Ancarrow (lacrosse). Hannesdottir earned the honor.
