HARRISONBURG, Va., April 22, 2013 -- JMU women's basketball player Kirby Burkholder (Bridgewater, Va./Turner Ashby) was recognized Monday night at the fifth annual JMU Athletics Recognition Banquet.
Burkholder was one of four finalists for JMU's Gary '81 and Fredericka (Cookie) McCollum Female Scholar-Athlete of the Year Award.
A Dean's List student majoring in sport and recreation management, Burkholder carries a 3.5 grade-point average.
The JMU junior is a two-time All-Colonial Athletic Association honoree, winning First Team honors in 2013 after receiving Third Team recognition in 2012. She was named to the 2013 Richmond Times-Dispatch All-State Second Team. Burkholder has also been selected to the CAA All-Academic Second Team the past two years.
In 2012-13 Burkholder led the Dukes in rebounds (9.1), steals (1.6) and 3-pointers (2.5) and ranked second in points (15.0), assists (3.5) and minutes played (34.7). She ranks second all-time at JMU in career 3-pointers with 181.
Tennis player Katherine Bulling won the McCollum Female Scholar-Athlete of the Year Award for the second year in a row. Other finalists were field hockey player Rachel Wein and cross country/track and field team member Katie Gorman.
