HARRISONBURG, Va., April 2, 2013 – The James Madison cross country team signed six runners to national letters of intent for the class of 2013-14, it was announced by head coach Dave Rinker.  Lillie Brown, Allison Huschke, Meghan Malloy, Tessa Mundell, Carol Strock and Maria Snyder will all become cross country Dukes in the fall.

“It was a great year for JMU distance running in regard to recruiting,” Rinker announced.  “We have signed six young ladies that bring outstanding character, great talent and a desire to excel with our program.  All six are exceptional students who will continue the academic excellence that the cross country and track & field teams are known for.”

The six athletes will also compete as members of the track & field program during the spring.

“Lillie, Tessa and Carol are outstanding middle distance runners while Allison, Meghan and Maria bring superior talent to the longer events in track,” adds Rinker.

Lillie Brown hails from Boiling Springs, Pa. and is one of four signees from the Keystone state.  Brown is a two-time District III champion in the 800-meter run and holds the Boiling Springs High School record for the event (2:13).  The honor roll student also was a member of the 2011 district-champion 4x800-meter relay team that set the district record for the event.  On the cross country side, she is also a two-time district champion and has placed in the top 16 at the Pennsylvania State championship meet each of the last three seasons.

Allison Huschke comes to JMU from just down the road in Charlottesville, Va.  She has been named to the All-Central Virginia Cross Country Team each of her four years at Albemarle High School and, last year, was named the Runner of the Year for central Virginia.  She is also a two-time all-state honoree for cross country and a four-time all-district runner for track & field (twice for the 1,600-meter run, twice for the 3,200-meter run).  The honor roll student finished 11th at the Virginia AAA State Cross Country Championships in her senior season.

Meghan Malloy will head south from Haddonfield Memorial High School in Haddonfield, New Jersey.  In her senior season, she earned such accolades as Colonial Conference Runner of the Year, South Jersey Cross Country Runner of the Year and Third Team All-State.  She finished fourth at the New Jersey Cross Country Group 2 championship and 23rd at the Meet of Championships for cross country.  She also helped lead the Bulldogs to the New Jersey Group 2 State championship in 2011.

Tessa Mundell is a native of Mohnton, Pa., and currently attends Governor Mifflin High School.  As a member of the Mustangs’ cross country squad, Mundell is a three-time Berks County individual champion (2010-12) and a three-time Berks County Athlete of the Year honoree (2010-12).  She is also a two-time 3,200-meter champion for Berks County (2011, 2012) and a two-time 1,600-meter champion for Berks County (2010, 2012).  Mundell holds the Governor Mifflin High School record for the 1,600-meter run, setting the time of 4:59.16 at the Pennsylvania Interscholastic Athletic Association track & field championships in 2012.

Carol Strock is the third signee from the Keystone state, making her way from Cumberland Valley High School in Mechanicsburg, Pa.  As a team captain, she helped lead the Eagles to the District III cross country championship and took fifth place as an individual in 2012.  She also finished in ninth place at the Pennsylvania State championship meet for cross country to earn all-state honors.  During track & field season in spring 2012, Strock set a school record in the 1,600-meter run of 4:57.43 when she took seventh place at the state championship.

Maria Snyder rounds out this year’s signing class from Pennsylvania and attends Northern Bedford County High School.  A local of Woodbury, Snyder is a two-time Inter-County Conference cross country champion (2011, 2012) and a two-time District V cross country champion (2011, 2012).  On the track & field side of competition, she has won the 1,600-meter and 3,200-meter runs for District V the last two years.  Snyder holds school and district records in both the 1,600-meter (5:08.20) and 3,200-meter (10:56.86) which she set as a sophomore in 2011.
