James Madison will face VMI for the second time this season, looking to complete a season sweep on Tuesday with first pitch at 5 p.m., one hour earlier than previously scheduled due to anticipated cold weather conditions.
The Dukes head to VMI after coming off of a challenging three-game sweep at the hands of Northeastern. The Diamond Dukes opened the series on Friday with a 12-5 loss, fell 8-3 to the Huskies in the second game on Saturday, then dropped the last game on Easter Sunday, a 5-0 complete game shutout. Johnny Bladel upped his hitting streak to 14 games after batting .600 in 10 at bats during the series. After entering the weekend with one of the top five averages in the nation, the Dukes hit just .255 as a team against the Huskies.
VMI rallied in its second game of a doubleheader on Saturday against Coastal Carolina, crawling back from an 8-1 deficit in the sixth to win in extra innings, on a dropped fly ball, 10-9. The Keydets fell to Coastal Carolina in the first two games of the series beginning with a close loss to the Chanticleers 3-2 in the series opener on Friday and a 6-1 loss on the first game of the doubleheader on Saturday.
The Keydets are batting .299 as a team, led by Rob Dickinson’s .390 mark with 14 extra-base hits for a .585 slugging percentage. Six other regulars are hitting .300 or better with Jordan Tarsovich at .333 with nine doubles and 23 RBIs.
JMU leads the all-time series against VMI 46-9 and will seek its third straight victory after dropping three straight from 2010 to 2011. The Dukes won 11-8 when hosted VMI in early March this season. JMU pounded 18 hits in that game, including a 5-for-5 day at the plate by second baseman Casey Goss.
