Leeper, Smith Finish 1-2 As Men's Golf Finishes Third at Bash at the Beach

MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. - The James Madison men's golf senior Rich Leeper (Chapel Hill, N.C./Carrboro) held off teammate sophomore Trey Smith (Virginia Beach, Va./Kellam) to take home medalist honors and lead Madison to a third-place finish at the 2013 Bash at the Beach, March 10-12. The three-day, 54-hole tournament, hosted by Appalachian State, was played at the The Surf Golf and Beach Club in Myrtle Beach, S.C.

Leeper and Smith started the day tied for fourth at 3-under 139, but Leeper fired an amazing 6-under 65 to finish at 9-under 204 and defeat Smith by one shot, who was at 8-under 205. Second-round leader Callum Tarren of Radford finished third at 7-under 206 after a final round even-par 71.

""Rich and Trey played great this week and it was a battle that came down to the last few holes," Head Coach Jeff Forbes said.  "It was good to see Rich win his first tournament. He has been playing and practicing well this spring."

The Dukes, as a team, put together easily its best round of the tournament and year, shooting a 9-under 275 to finish at 6-over 858 in third place. Radford led from wire-to-wire, finishing at 7-under 845, five shots better than Jacksonville at 2-under 850. Western Kentucky was fourth at 14-under 866 with High Point rounding out the top five at 18-over 870.

Junior Ben Firebaugh (Roanoke, Va./William Byrd Newberry)) was next in a tie for 39th at 13-over 226 with teammate freshman Tyler Williams (Hilton Head Island, S.C./Hilton Head Prep), as the pair shot 2-over 73 and 1-over 72, respectively, in the final 18. Freshman Chris Kapsak (Richmond, Va./Trinity Episcopal) was the final team Duke, tying for 46th at 15-over 228, as he also posted a 1-over 72 in the last round. Playing as individuals, junior Tucker Koch (Malvern, Pa./Malvern Prep.) tied for 18th at 3-over 216, while senior Ryan Vince (Charlotte, N.C./Providence) tied for 28th at 7-over 220.

The Dukes will tee off in the final round, as the Dukes will play with High Point and Appalachian State in the final round, starting on holes 4-7.
