BOSTON, Mass., March 2, 2013 - The James Madison track & field team began competition of the Eastern College Athletic Conference indoor championships with athletes lining up in five events. Four of those five events were preliminary heats, and the Dukes advanced runners in the 60-meter dash and 4x800-meter relay.
Senior Marissa McDonald (Harrisburg, Pa./Central Dauphin East) first ran the second heat of the 60-meter dash in 7.62 seconds and advanced to the semi-final round of the event. In the first heat of the semi-finals, she crossed the line in 7.55 seconds and finished fifth in the round to advance to Sunday's final running of the 60-meter dash. Her semi-final time tied the ECAC winner's time from 2012 and is 0.15 seconds behind the leader of the day. She also passed her 2012 finish of ninth place (7.62 seconds).
The 4x800-meter relay will also run in the final heat of their event as they came in second in Saturday's preliminary running with a time of 8:57.63. Sophomore Tiel Westbrook (Mechanicsville, Va./Lee-Davis) ran the first leg, making the handoff with senior Annie Reiner (Virginia Beach, Va./Ocean Lakes) and sophomore Kelsey Langton (Hamilton Square, N.J./Notre Dame HS) took the second handoff. Junior Erin Lopresti (Cranberry Township, Pa./Seneca Valley) anchored the event and helped the team finish just 0.21 seconds behind preliminary leader Fordham.
As the lone single-round runner of the day for Madison, senior Katie Gorman (Lafayette Hill, Pa./Plymouth-Whitemarsh) placed 13th in the 5,000-meter run with a time of 16:57.38.
The Dukes' 4x400-meter relay team finished 22nd in the third heat of the preliminaries with a time of 3:50.84 and did not advance to the final heat on Sunday. Senior Ciarra Morris (Richmond, Va./Meadowbrook) was disqualified in the 400-meter dash due to a lane violation in the sixth heat.
ECAC indoor championships will resume for day three on Sunday, March 3. The final day kicks off with the shot put event at 9:30 a.m. at Boston University's Track and Tennis Center.
