HARRISONBURG, Va., Jan. 18, 2012 – On Dec. 2, the James Madison softball team took part in the JMU Student Athlete Advisory Committee’s (SAAC) Winter Wonderland event. The event, which was open to any elementary age child that participates in JMU’s Overcoming Barriers program, as well as all elementary age children within the local elementary schools of Harrisonburg/Rockingham County, featured a fun day with a number of the JMU teams.

The softball Dukes spent their time playing kickball and corn hole with the day’s participants. Senior infielder Kaitlyn Barbour (Nokesville, Va./Brentsville District) was asked to write a brief report on her team’s activity and what it meant to her.

In Their Own Words – Kaitlyn Barbour

On Sunday, December 2nd, 2012, the student-athletes of James Madison University worked together to provide a day of winter-themed fun for young children throughout the community.  As a member of the James Madison University softball team it was a great opportunity to give back to the community. Each player on the Softball team is extremely fortunate to be given an opportunity to play the sport we love.  As a team within a prestigious athletic department, we wanted to provide children with a chance to experience fun through sport and activity.

Each JMU athletic team had a different station set up so that the children could participate in different activities. The softball team decided to set up a kickball station as well as a corn hole station. We chose these activities because we love to play them during our spare time. The corn hole went great! It was fun to see the kids challenge themselves to get the beanbag in the hole. Some would get frustrated, but they kept trying until they succeeded. As for kickball, I think it was one of the best stations at the event. We ended up playing three games! The kids loved it especially because it was a lot like softball.

This was a great opportunity for the children within the Harrisonburg community to meet JMU athletes and have a chance to interact with us. It is nice to give back to the community because of all the things we are blessed with. Not everybody gets the chance to play the sport they love every single day.  I want to thank the community for coming out and making this a great day! It was nice to act like a kid again and see the smiling faces of young children as they ran around the field from activity to activity.
