RICHMOND, Va., Nov. 12, 2012 – James Madison volleyball freshman outside hitter Meghan Niski (St. Charles, Ill./St. Charles East) was named the Colonial Athletic Association Rookie of the Week on Monday. This is the second time this season Niski has garnered the conference’s weekly honor.
Niski averaged 3.71 kills and 2.43 digs per set while leading JMU to a 1-1 record and helping it clinch a berth in this weekend’s CAA Championship. In the Dukes’ 3-0 win over Northeastern on Friday, Niski had a career-high 17 kills on .361 hitting, adding eight digs and a block. The first-year Duke collected nine kills, nine digs and two blocks in a four-set match against Hofstra on Saturday. Overall, she hit .265 for the weekend and did not commit a receiving error in 29 attempts.
Niski finished her first regular season averaging 2.37 kills and 2.57 digs per set. She hit .187 on the year while starting all 27 matches this season.
Towson’s Katy Buck and Hofstra’s Kelsie Wills shared the CAA’s Offensive Player of the Week honor while Towson’s Alysha McCreary was named the Defensive Player of the Week.
JMU returns to action on Friday, Nov. 16 in the quarterfinals of the CAA Championship. The sixth-seeded Dukes take on third-seeded Northeastern at 4 p.m. in Towson, Md.
