KIAWAH ISLAND, S.C. - Battling windy conditions due to Hurricane Sandy, the James Madison women's golf team finished 13th at the 2012 Palmetto Intercollegiate, Oct. 28-29. The two-day, 54-hole tournament was played at Oak Point Golf Club (Par 72 - 5,906 yards) in Kiawah Island, S.C.
JMU completed its second round at 21-over 307 and dropped to 12th place entering the final round. From there, the Dukes struggled to put four scores together and posted a 25-over 311 to finish at 55-over 919 in 13th. Campbell led from wire-to-wire to win the tournament with a 2-over 866, finishing 21 shots ahead of runner-up East Tennessee State at 23-over 887. Coastal Carolina was third at 27-over 891, while Michigan, Elon and Maryland tied for fourth at 30-over 894.
Sophomore Maria Andrea Legaspi (Quezon City, Philippines/St. Paul College-Pasig) was the top Madison finisher, tying for 23rd at 8-over 224, including a final round team-best 2-over 74. Junior Ginger Mak (North Point, Hong Kong/The International School of Macao) was one shot back at 9-over 225 in a tie for 26th. Sophomore Shabril Brewer (Herndon, Va./Westfield) completed the tournament in a tie for 54th at 17-over 231, while freshman Karishma Thiagaraj (Haymarket, Va./Battlefield) placed 77th at 23-over 239. Sophomore Coty Hudson (Lynchburg, Va./E.C. Glass (Hollins)) was the final JMU finisher in a tie for 93rd at 39-over 255.
Campbell's Maria Jose Benavides took home the individual tournament title with a 3-under 213, the only player to finish under-par for the 54 holes. Christine Shimel of Maryland, Elon's Martyna Mierzwa and ETSU's Vivienne Chin tied for second at 1-over 217.
The Dukes have wrapped up their fall schedule and will next be on the course Mon.-Tue., Feb. 4-5 at the University of Miami Invitational. The tournament will be held at the Deering Bay Yacht & Country Club in Miami, Fla.
