CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va., Oct. 6, 2012 -- Senior Ryan Pool and freshman Robert Stirling teamed to go 2-0 in doubles action on Saturday to win the White Doubles Flight championship for the James Madison men's tennis team on day two of the UVA Fall Classic.
Pool and Stirling defeated East Tennessee State's Varon and Ramirez 8-5 to advance to the championship match. The duo then battled William and Mary's Banks and Chaffee to an 8-6 victory.
Stirling also won his lone singles match of the day against Penn State's CJ Griffin 7-6(6), 6-2 to advance to the consolation finals match in the Red Singles Flight. Pool suffered his first singles loss of the season, falling to three-seed Claes Goransson (VCU) 6-4, 6-2.
Freshman Maxi Branth (Stockholm, Sweden) picked up a second singles win for the Dukes on Saturday afternoon. Branth defeated the Gold Singles Flight three-seed Dima Zymantovich (Norfolk State) 6-3, 6-4 to advance to the Gold consolation finals match on Sunday.
The Dukes will finish the three-day tournament on Sunday in Charlottesville, Va. Singles play is set to begin at 9 a.m.
