Volleyball Drops 3-1 Decision at Hofstra

HEMPSTEAD, N.Y., Oct. 5, 2012 – Senior outside hitter Danielle Erb (Tampa, Fla./Plant) became the ninth player in school history to record 1,000 career digs, but Hofstra recorded 63 kills on .237 hitting to defeat the James Madison volleyball team 3-1 in Hempstead, N.Y., on Friday night. 

Hofstra won by set scores of 25-21, 25-17, 25-27, 25-15 to improve to 14-9 overall and 2-2 in the Colonial Athletic Association. JMU lost for the first time in CAA play to fall to 9-8 overall and 2-1 in the league. 

Erb finished with her team-leading ninth double-double of the season, collecting a team-high 13 kills and 11 digs. She committed just three errors in 42 attempts for a .238 attack percentage, adding three blocks, a service ace and an assist. She is tied for seventh on the school’s all-time digs list with Dana Jones (2000-03) and Holly Wall (2008-11) with precisely 1,000 and is the fourth player in school history to reach the 1,000 milestone in both kills and digs. 

Redshirt senior outside hitter Natalie Abel (Washington, Pa./Trinity) added her fifth double-double of the season with 11 kills and 15 digs. She had two blocks and a service ace while sophomore middle blocker Lizzy Briones (Siloam Springs, Ark./Siloam Springs) contributed seven kills and five blocks. 

Freshman setter Sarah Patterson (Roanoke, Va./Hidden Valley) made her first collegiate start and supplied 15 assists, three kills, a block and a service ace for the Dukes. Senior setter Megan Wiechmann (Sunland, Calif./Village Christian) had a team-best 19 assists and five digs off the bench. Junior libero Katie Daorai (Tampa, Fla./Plant) led the team with 16 digs to go with two assists, one ace and a kill. 

Hofstra outside hitter Kelsie Wills finished with 18 kills and eight digs to lead three players in double figure kills. Outside hitter Nikki Kinnier added 14 kills on .333 hitting while outside hitter Emily Burke had 12 kills and four digs. Setter Catalina Charry just missed a triple-double for the Pride, collecting 30 assists, a match-high 19 digs and nine kills. She hit .319 for the match, committing three errors in 19 attempts. 

Setter Kainoa Ocasek supplied 16 assists and eight digs off the bench for HU while libero Kylee Maneja supplied 10 digs and three service aces. 

Hofstra outhit JMU .237 to .197 and collected 63 kills to 43 for Madison. JMU finished with more blocks, 9-5, but had just five service aces to the Pride’s eight. 

HU took control of the first set early, building a 9-3 lead and forcing Dukes’ head coach Lauren Steinbrecher to call timeout. The Dukes got the lead down to as little as two at 14-12, but gave up a 4-1 run to fall behind 18-13. JMU kept fighting and used a 5-0 run to tie the score at 18 all. A 7-3 run to close out the set, allowed HU to claim a 1-0 lead in the match with a 25-21 win. 

The teams went back and forth early in set two until, with the score tied 13-13, HU went on a 7-1 run to grab a 20-13 lead and force Madison to use both of its timeouts. The Dukes got as close as four points, but lost the final four points of the set to drop a 25-17 decision. 

Set three featured seven tie scores and five lead changes. Trailing by two, JMU won seven of eight points to go up 22-18. Hofstra came right back with a 5-0 run to regain the lead. The teams traded the lead twice more with Hofstra getting to set point first at 25-24. The Dukes extended the match to a fourth set with a 3-0 run fueled by Abel and freshman middle blocker Sarah Delaney (Herndon, Va./South Lakes). The duo combined for a block before Abel picked up a service ace and Delaney notched a kill to put away the set. 

The Pride took a 7-6 lead early in set four and never looked back, using four separate runs of at least three points to run away with a 25-15 victory in the set. 

JMU returns to actions on Sunday as it travels to Boston, Mass., for a 1 p.m. match at Northeastern.
