Men's Tennis Completes Day Two of Elon Invitational

HARRISONBURG, Va. - The James Madison men's tennis team completed the second day of competition at the 2012 Elon Invitational this afternoon in Elon, N.C.

Continuing his winning ways was senior Ryan Pool (Melbourne, Australia/Braemar (Chattanooga)), moving to a perfect 6-0 in singles play this fall.  On Saturday, Pool defeated Elon's Brian Kowalski 7-5, 7-6(3) in the quarterfinals and East Carolina's John Schmitt 6-3, 6-2 in the semifinals to advance to the A2 Singles championship game.  Pool will face Ted Nilsson of Coastal Carolina University at 1 p.m. on Sunday.

Senior Bastien Russo (Lyon, France/Notre Dame des Minimes (Shorter)) also had a successful day as he advanced to the C2 Singles consolation final.  Russo cruised to a 6-0, 6-3 victory over North Carolina Wesleyan's Panayot Kusidi in the quarterfinals before taking a hard-fought win over Longwood's Bharani Sankar in the semifinals.  Sanaker took the first set 6-1, but Russo battled back to win the final two sets including the third-set tiebreaker, to take the match, 1-6, 7-6 (5), 1-0 (6).

In C1 Singles quarterfinals action, freshman Maxi Branth (Stockholm, Sweden) took down East Carolina's Patriek Wolterbeek 6-2, 7-5.  Branth then took set one 6-2 against USC Upstate's Jamie Yates in the semifinals, but ultimately fell in the final two sets to lose 2-6, 6-2, 6-1.

Fellow freshman Robert Stirling (Caboolture, Australia) also went 1-1 on day two singles action.  Stirling saw victory in the B1 Singles consolation quarterfinals when he faced North Carolina Wesleyan's Artsiom Prostak, taking the the win in straight sets, 6-4, 6-3.  He fell to East Carolina's Colin Roller 6-3, 7-6 (5) in the semifinals.

The Dukes will return to action for the final day of the Elon Invitational on Sunday morning.  Doubles play is set to begin at 9 a.m.
