STARKVILLE, Miss., May 17, 2012 – Senior shortstop Ashley Burnham (Danvers, Mass./Danvers) and freshman designated player/pitcher Sarah Mooney (Huntersville, N.C./North Mecklenburg) were named to the National Fastpitch Coaches Association (NFCA) Division I All-Northeast Region Second Team as announced by the NFCA on Thursday.

Burnham collected her third All-Region honor after being named Second Team in 2010 and First Team in 2011. She remains the only player in school history to collect the NFCA honor more than once. Mooney joined Burnham on the region’s Second Team.

Burnham adds the honor to her 2012 Colonial Athletic Association Player of the Year and First Team All-CAA selections. She is the only player in conference history to win the CAA Player of the Year honor twice and is the only player in school history to be named to the all-conference First Team three times. She hit .335 with a .395 on-base percentage and a .652 slugging percentage in 52 games started this season. The senior shortstop led the team in doubles (15), home runs (11), RBIs (42) and runs (38) while adding 14 walks and nine steals. She also committed just 10 errors in 195 opportunities for a .951 fielding percentage. The Danvers, Mass., native finished her career as JMU’s all-time leader in home runs, doubles, RBIs, total bases, consecutive games started and assists. She also holds single-season records for home runs, slugging percentage and assists.

Mooney is the first player in school history to garner All-Region honors as a freshman. She adds the award to her Second Team All-CAA and CAA All-Rookie recognitions. The first-year Duke finished the season hitting .322 with 25 runs scored and 29 RBIs in 49 games started. She added eight doubles, nine home runs, 11 walks and five steals. Her nine home runs are the second most by a freshman and are tied for the fourth-highest single-season total in school history. She was named to the CAA All-Tournament team after going 5-for-11 with two doubles, a home run, three RBIs and two runs scored. In the circle, Mooney added an 8-10 record with a 3.56 ERA in 29 appearances. She threw seven complete games and two shutouts while limiting opponents to a .242 batting average against.

The NFCA honored 263 athletes from 129 different institutions, including First and Second Team selections for each of the ten regions. The All-Region teams were selected by NFCA member coaches from each region, and all the honorees will now be eligible for selection to one of three NFCA Division I All-American Teams.
