HARRISONBURG, Va., April 23, 2012 -- James Madison redshirt sophomore men's soccer player Adam Bastidas (Catasauqua, Pa., Catasauqua) is the recipient of JMU's Gary '81 and Fredericka (Cookie) McCollum Male Scholar-Athlete of the Year Award.
The award was presented Monday night at the fourth annual JMU Athletics Recognition Banquet.
Bastidas is a President's List student majoring in interdisciplinary liberal studies with a minor in middle school education. He received Scholar All-East Region Honorable Mention from the National Soccer Coaches Association of America in the fall of 2011, and he is a two-time recipient of the Colonial Athletic Association Commissioner's Academic Award.
Also recognized at Monday's banquet was junior soccer player Paul Wyatt (Modbury, England/Ivybridge), who was among the finalists for JMU's Male Athlete of the Year Award. The Athlete of the Year Award was presented to baseball player Jake Lowery.
Wyatt was named to the NSCAA All-America Second Team and the NSCAA All-South Atlantic Region First Team in 2011. He also earned All-CAA First Team honors and was named to the CAA All-Tournament Team. Wyatt ranked second on the team in goals (6) and points (15) and tied for second on the team in assists (3) in 2011.
Both Bastidas and Wyatt were starters on the Dukes' nationally-ranked soccer team (24th by Soccer America, 20th by NSCAA) that finished first in the CAA and advanced to the round of 16 in the 2011 NCAA Tournament.
