STARKVILLE, Miss., June 23, 2011 – James Madison softball recruit Sarah Mooney (Huntersville, N.C./North Mecklenberg) was named to the National Fastpitch Coaches Association All-South Region First Team on Thursday.
Mooney, one of five players the Dukes signed to be freshman for the 2011-12 school year, is one of 160 student athletes from 107 high schools spanning 33 states to be named to one of the 10 Louisville Slugger/NFCA High School All-Region teams. This is the second time the North Carolina native has been named All-Region. In 2010, she was named a First Team All-American and the NFCA/Diamond Sports National Catcher of the Year.
As a player that was selected to one of the five first teams, Mooney is eligible to be named to either a First, Second or Honorable Mention All-America team. The 2011 Louisville Slugger/NFCA All-America teams will be announced on Tuesday, June 28.
Joining Mooney as part of JMU’s 2011-12 freshman class are outfielders Haley Widner (Columbus, Ohio/Bishop Ready) and Morgan Heath (Yorktown, Va./Grafton) and pitchers Reba DePriest (Apache Junction, Ariz./Skyline) and Heather Kiefer (Potomac Falls, Va./Potomac Falls).
The Dukes went 29-23 overall in 2011 and 8-12 in Colonial Athletic Association play. They return First Team All-CAA selections in rising senior shortstop Ashley Burnham (Danvers, Mass./Danvers) and rising sophomore third baseman Caitlin Sandy (Fayetteville, N.C./Jack Britt). Rising junior center fielder, and Second Team All-CAA selection, Jasmine Butler (Winter Garden, Fla./West Orange) also returns after leading the conference in batting average.
