HARRISONBURG, Va., June 29, 2010 - James Madison director of athletics Jeff Bourne on Tuesday announced the hiring of John Martin as assistant athletics director in charge of JMU's renamed athletics communications office.
"We're extremely pleased to bring John and his vast experience in intercollegiate athletics to our program at JMU," commented Bourne. "We're looking forward to the guidance he will provide to our staff as we expand the programs and services offered. The athletics communications function will expand beyond traditional sports information and will increase the resources available for our coaches, student-athletes, and the many fans interested in our programs."
Athletics communications, formerly sports media relations, handles all communication efforts of the university's 18-sport department of intercollegiate athletics. Responsibilities of the office include design and daily upkeep of JMUSports.com, production of online video and audio content, statistical compilation and media coordination at all athletics events, production of game programs and printed sports guides, handling of daily media requests, and maintenance of all records and historical information.
Martin, who served as assistant athletic director for media relations at Coastal Carolina, will handle all communication responsibilities for JMU football as well as the men's and women's golf programs. He held similar duties at CCU during his seven years in Conway, serving as the contact for football, golf, and women's tennis, while also handling men's basketball early in his tenure. Prior to the move to South Carolina, Martin was assistant sports information director at Eastern Michigan University for four years, assistant SID at the University of Detroit Mercy for two years, and director of basketball operations for the Oklahoma City Cavalry in the Continental Basketball Association (CBA) for two years. He is a 1992 graduate of the University of Oklahoma with a bachelor's degree in marketing and a master's in 1994 in sport management with a concentration in public relations.
Martin fills the supervisory role previously held by long-time JMU SID Gary Michael, who retired in June after 30 years in the sports media relations office, including 25 as director. Michael served as the contact for both football and men's basketball for JMU.
Curt Dudley, director of multimedia communications, returns to athletics communications, where he has spent the majority of his 23 years with JMU. Curt manages JMUSports.com, MadiZONE, the JMU/nTelos radio network, game-day video operations, and all other multimedia programs.
Assistant director of athletics communications Milla Sue Wisecarver will continue to work with JMU women's basketball, men's and women's soccer, and lacrosse. She has been JMU's women's basketball SID for each of the program's 28 years in NCAA Division I.
Men's basketball responsibilities will now be assumed by associate director of athletics communications Kevin Warner, who will also continue to work with baseball after a promotion from his previous assistant director position.
Brian Hansen has been promoted to athletics communications associate and will continue as the contact for softball while adding field hockey, swimming and diving, and volleyball.
The sport coverage portion of the staff will be rounded out by Chris Brooks, who was hired for the 2010-11 academic year as an athletics communications assistant. After spending the 2009-10 year as a communications intern with the Colonial Athletic Association, Brooks will work with cross country, track and field, and men's and women's tennis.
The staff for JMU's athletics communications office continues to include photography supervisor Cathy Kushner, graphic artist/publications coordinator Teresa Craig, and executive assistant Judy Larson.
