RICHMOND, Va., Aug. 9, 2013 – The James Madison men’s soccer squad was chosen to finish third in the Colonial Athletic Association in 2013, according to the preseason vote by league coaches released today.  The Dukes garnered 36 total points, including one first-place vote.

In 2012, JMU notched a 9-7-3 overall record and a 6-2-2 conference record.  The Dukes finished third for the regular season in the league and advanced to the CAA Tournament semifinals where they fell to the eventual-champion Huskies.

Seven starters from last year’s squad will return for 2013, led by junior forward Josh Grant (Plymouth, England/Torpoint College), who was second on the team in goals scored with seven, including a team-high four game-winning goals.  He started in all 18 games he saw action in last season and was tabbed to the CAA All-Rookie team.

Fellow all-rookie teammate Bjarki Aðalsteinsson (Kópavogur, Iceland/Menntaskólinn í Kópavogi), a sophomore defender, will also return to the pitch for the Dukes in 2013 after a freshman campaign that garnered First Team All-CAA accolades and the Virginia Rookie of the Year title.

Northeastern, the reigning CAA tournament champion, was selected the preseason favorite, tallying 44 points and three first-place votes.  Drexel, the 2012 regular season conference champion, was just behind in second place with 41 points and three first-place votes.  With the Dukes holding third place, Hofstra picked up 35 points and a first-place vote to take fourth place and round out the top half of the preseason ballot.

UNCW was picked to finish fifth this year and William & Mary landed in sixth place.  Conference-newcomer College of Charleston was projected to take seventh place in its first season in the league while Delaware rounded out the field in eighth place.
