HARRISONBURG, Va., April 22, 2013 -- JMU soccer players came away the school's top athletics honors Monday night at the fifth annual JMU Athletics Recognition Banquet.
Senior Paul Wyatt (Modbury, England/Ivybridge) was the recipient of the Male Athlete of the Year Award, while redshirt junior Adam Bastidas (Catasauqua, Pa., Catasauqua) won JMU's Male Scholar-Athlete of the Year Award.
Wyatt was a finalist for the athlete of the year award last year, and Bastidas received the scholar-athlete honor for the second year in a row.
Wyatt led JMU in in goals (9) and points (21), and following the 2012 season he was invited to the adidas Major League Soccer Player Combine. A four-year starter, he was twice named to the National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) All-South Atlantic Region First Team and was voted to the NSCAA All-America Second Team in 2011. Wyatt was a four-time All-CAA honoree, earning First Team recognition in 2011 and 2012, Second Team honors in 2010 and Third Team recognition in 2009.
Bastidas is a President's List student majoring in interdisciplinary liberal studies with a minor in middle school education, and he has a 3.77 grade-point average. He received Scholar All-East Region Honorable Mention from the NSCAA in the fall of 2011, and he is a three-time recipient of the CAA Commissioner’s Academic Award.
