Field Hockey Falls 6-1 at No. 4 Virginia

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va., Sept. 25, 2013 – James Madison field hockey fell 6-1 to No. 4 Virginia on the road Wednesday, falling to 5-4 on the season.  The Cavaliers are now 9-1 on the year.

Senior Amy Goldstein (Lititz, Pa./Warwick) had the lone goal of the game for JMU, picking up the rebound off the goalie’s pads.  The rebound came after two quick shots following the Dukes’ first and only corner of the night. 

Sophomore Adrienne le Vatte (Port Elizabeth, South Africa/Alexander Road) led the Dukes with three shots on the night.  

Virginia’s Jenny Johnstone earned the win as she allowed one goal with three saves, and sophomore Lena Wimmert (Bergisch Gladbach, Germany/Lise-Meitner Gymnasium) took the loss with six goals allowed and four saves.

Virginia’s Elly Buckley posted two goals and one assist, including the first score of the night.  Both of her scores came off direct corners.  Riley Tata also posted two goals for the Cavaliers, one in the 17th minute to give Virginia the 2-0 lead and another in the 33rd minute for the third Virginia goal of the night. 

A minute after Tata’s first goal, junior Dana Allaband (Elkton, Md./Rising Sun) made a quick defensive save to keep the score at 2-0.

The fifth score of the night for Virginia came from Hadley Bell in the 63rd minute of the game and an own goal in the 66th minute rounded out the scoring for the Cavaliers.

JMU opens conference play on Sunday with a trip to William & Mary.  Play gets underway at 1 p.m. in Williamsburg, Va.
