MIAMI, Fla. (February 5, 2013) - The James Madison University women's golf team played better in the second and third rounds and finished 15th at the 2013
Hurricane Invitational, Feb. 4-5. The two-day, 54-hole event was
played at Deering Bay Yacht and Country Club (Par 71 - 6,007 yards) in
The Dukes completed their second round early in the morning and improved five shots on their opening round with a 38-over 322. JMU then followed it up with a 12-shot improvement in the final round to shoot a 26-over 310 and finish at 107-over 959. Baylor rallied in the final two rounds, posting a tournament-best 5-over 289 in the second round and a 12-over 296 in the final 18 to take home the tournament title at 31-over 883. Runner-up Texas State was four shots back at 35-over 887, with host Miami in third at 46-over 898. Oklahoma State (50-over 902) and Mercer (67-over 919) round out the top five schools.
Madison was led by sophomore Maria Andrea Legaspi (Quezon City, Philippines/St. Paul College-Pasig) who shot a 1-under 70 in the final round to tie for 20th at 14-over 227. Junior Ginger Mak (North Point, Hong Kong/The International School of Macao) was next in a tie for 27th, three shots back of Legaspi at 17-over 230. Sophomores Shabril Brewer (Herndon, Va./Westfield) and Nikola Wessels (Muenster, Germany/Marienschule Muenster) were next for Madison with scores of 26-over 239 (tie for 55th) and 50-over 263 (83rd) respectively. Freshman Kelsey Solan (Lumberton, N.J./Rancocas Valley) was the final JMU player at 53 over 266.
Kelsey Vines of Oklahoma State took home the top honors as the only player at par or better all four rounds, finishing at 4-under 209. Texas State's Krista Puisite was the runner-up at even-par 213, while Baylor's Lauren Taylor was third at 2-over 215
The Dukes will next be on the course when they host the 2013 JMU/Eagle Landing Invitational at Eagle Landing Country Club in Orange Park, Fla., March 8-10.
