HARRISONBURG, Va., Aug. 24,
2012 -- Unbeaten Georgetown (3-0-0) escaped with a 1-0
win at James Madison (1-1-0) in women's
soccer Friday night in the opening round of the JMU/Fairfield Inn by
Marriott Invitational Tournament at University Park.
The Hoyas, who are receiving votes in the coaches Top 25 poll, scored with 8:18
remaining to pull out the victory.
Junior Kaitlin Brenn (Branchburg, N.J./Somerville)
intercepted a ball cleared by redshirt sophomore goalkeeper Kate Courter (Lincoln Park, N.J./Immaculate Heart) and blasted a
23-yard shot to the corner of the goal.
JMU held a 12-10 advantage on shots for the game, and both teams had a number
of quality scoring chances. Courter and
sophomore goalkeeper Emma Newins (Glen
Allen, Va./Deep Run) each finished with six saves.
In the day's first game, Hofstra (2-0-0) trailed
1-0 early before scoring three unanswered goals en route to a 3-1 win over Temple (0-0-1).
Temple senior Jourdan Brill (Lancaster, Pa./Penn
Manor) scored an unassisted goal in the 22nd minute, but Hofstra evened the
score when sophomore Sam Scolarici (Aldie,
Va./Freedom) knocked a ball into the net from the edge of the box in the 36th
minute.
The Pride then netted back-to-back goals in a span of less than three minutes
in the second half. Sophomore Lulu
Echeverry (East Meadow, N.Y./East Meadow) scored on a 10-yard shot in the
64th minute, and freshman Jill
Mulholland (Levittown, N.Y./MacArthur) blasted a 16-yard shot into the goal
in the 67th minute.
