DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. - The James Madison University Cheer squad posted the best score of Thursday's opening round and advanced into Friday's 10-team finals at the 2012 National Cheerleading Association Collegiate Cheer and Dance Championships.
"This is JMU's time," said cheer coach Kelly Moore. "We have trained hard every day for the past five months for this competition, and these athletes have persevered through so much to get to where they are. Our goal is to bring back a cheerleading national championship to JMU."
The judges scored the JMU squad with an 8.543, edging out reigning champion Texas El Paso's 8.215. Weatherford University sits in third with an 8.195, followed by Utah Valley (8.133), and Michigan (8.100). The next four to automatically advance are Georgia Southern (8.023), East Central (7.830), Rogers State (7.813) and Iowa State (7.795).
The top 10 advance into the finals and those still in the running as of Thursday afternoon were Central Oklahoma, Columbia, Marshall, Palomar College, American, VCU, Wright State, and Northern Colorado State.
"We want thank all of our supporters because if it wasn't for you we wouldn't be here. I am so incredibly proud of each and every one of our cheerleaders," said Moore, who in a true cheering fashion added, "Let's go JMU Nation!!"
