JMU jumped out to a 2-0 lead just two minutes into the match, but Cal outscored JMU 5-2 over the remainder of the first half to take a 5-4 lead into intermission. The Bears then increased their lead to 7-5 less than three minutes into the second half.
However, the Dukes scored eight goals while holding Cal to just two goals in the final 25:58 of the game.
Four Dukes scored multiple goals, with three goals each coming from seniors Ashley Kimener (Oakton, Va./Oakton), Caitlin McHugh (Westminster, Md./Mercy) and senior Ariel Lane (Vero Beach , Fla./Vero Beach). Senior Monica Zabel (Ellicott City, Md./Mt. Hebron) added two goals and a game-high three assists.
Kimener scored her three goals on just three shots, and McHugh scored three goals on four shots.
Zabel, McHugh and senior Annie Brophy (Berwyn, Pa./Archbishop Carroll) led the Dukes with two draw controls apiece, and senior Cally Chakrian (East Meadow, N.Y./East Meadow) had a game-high seven ground balls.
Cal was led in scoring by Paige Gasparino with three goals and Megan Takacs with two scores.
Dukes' redshirt junior goalkeeper Alex Menghetti (Media, Pa./Penncrest) finished with 10 saves, and Cal goaltender Megan McGinnnis made 13 stops.
The Dukes continue their West Coast trip with a 4 p.m. (ET) game at sixth-ranked Stanford on Feb. 25.
