Women's Basketball Downs UNCW 63-52 for 20th Win

HARRISONBURG, Va., Feb. 16, 2012 -- James Madison scored the game's first 12 points and never trailed in posting a 63-52 women's basketball win over North Carolina Wilmington Thursday night at the JMU Convocation Center.

JMU posted its seventh straight 20-win season as the Dukes improved their overall record to 20-5.  JMU has an 11-3 record in Colonial Athletic Association play and remains in sole possession of second place in the league standings.  It was the fifth straight win for the Dukes, tying the team's longest winning streak of the season.

UNCW's record is 15-10 overall and 8-6 in the CAA.

Dukes' sophomore guard Kirby Burkholder (Bridgewater, Va./Turner Ashby) led all players with 18 points, all of them from 3-point range where she connected on 6-of-8 attempts.  That tied Burkholder's career-high for 3-pointers.  Sophomore guard Tarik Hislop (Silver Spring, Md./Paint Branch) added 17 and was the only other JMU player to score in double figures.
 
JMU junior forward Nikki Newman (Harrisonburg, Va./Turner Ashby) led the Dukes with 12 rebounds and six assists.  Redshirt senior forward Lauren Whitehurst (Chesapeake, Va./Indian River) added nine points on 4-for-9 shooting and had seven rebounds and four blocked shots.

The Seahawks had three players score 11 points:  sophomore guard/forward Abria Trice (Atlanta, Ga./Dutchtown), sophomore guard Alisha Andrews (Stone Mountain, Ga./Redan) and junior forward Karneshia Garrett (Hoover, Ala./Hoover).  Garrett led all players with 13 rebounds.

Game Notes:

First Half

* JMU shot 54 percent (14-26) from the field while UNCW shot only 24 percent (9-38).  However, the Dukes committed 12 turnovers to only five for UNCW.
* JMU scored the game's first 12 points and never trailed. 
* After missing its first shot of the game, JMU hit seven of its next eight field-goal attempts.
* UNCW got as close as five, 22-17, with 7:08 left.
* JMU scored eight unanswered points, including two 3-pointers by Kirby Burkholder, to go ahead 31-17 with 5:15 left.
* Burkholder scored 12 points, all from 3-point range, where she was 4-for-6.  Tarik Hislop scored 11 on 5-for-8 shooting.

Second Half
* JMU led by as many as 18, 49-31, at 11:18 but then went 3:35 without scoring a point.
* UNCW got within nine on two occasions, the last 52-43 at 6:01, but could get no closer.

And More
* JMU shot a season-high 51 percent (26-51) after shooting a then season-high 46 percent (29-63) in its last outing, a win at VCU.
* JMU held an opponent under 30 percent shooting from the field for the fourth time this season and held an opponent under 32 percent shooting for the 11th time.  In four of the Dukes' last five games opponents have shot under 32 percent.
