Women's Basketball Loses 74-66 to Richmond

BETHLEHEM, Pa., Dec. 29, 2011 -- Richmond downed the James Madison women's basketball team 74-66 Thursday evening at Lehigh's Stabler Arena.

UR improved to 11-2 with its fifth straight victory, while JMU dropped to 7-3.

The game was the first of two games in the opening round of the Lehigh Christmas City Classic. 

Richmond 6-0 sophomore forward Genevieve Okoro scored a career- and game-high 27 points and also led all players with 10 rebounds.  She hit on 8-of-13 from the field and 11-of 15 from the foul line.  Senior guard Abby Oliver added 14 points for the Spiders.

JMU senior forward Kiara Francisco (Lakeland, Fla./Winter Haven) came off the bench to lead the Dukes with a career-high 20 points; she also had a season-high seven rebounds.  Junior guard Tarik Hislop (Silver Spring, Md./Paint Branch) added 16 points. 

Junior forward Nikki Newman (Harrisonburg, Va./Turner Ashby) was JMU's top rebounder with nine, and redshirt senior forward Lauren Whitehurst (Chesapeake, Va./Indian River) finished with seven rebounds.

Richmond scored 46 points from the field and 25 from the foul line, where the Spiders converted on 25 of 33 attempts.  In the opening half all 11 Richmond field goals were scored on layups.

Game Notes:

First Half

* Richmond led for most of the half, and by as many as five, on four occasions (the last time 17-12 at 10:37).
* JMU led only twice -- the opening basket, and at 28-26 with 1:05 left.
* Richmond scored all 11 of its field goals on layups and its remaining six points at the foul line, where the Spiders were 6-for-7.   The game was tied at 28 at halftime.
* Kiara Francisco came off the bench to lead JMU in scoring with eight points.

Second Half
* JMU opened the half with two free throws by Nikki Newman, taking a 30-28 lead at 18:23.
* That was the Dukes' only lead of the half.  Richmond outscored JMU 10-2 to take a 38-32 lead with 14:38 remaining.
* After the teams traded baskets, JMU used an 8-3 run to pull within one, 43-42, on a three-point play by Kiara Francisco with 11:24 left.  Francisco scored six of the Dukes' points during the rally.
* Richmond scored 10 straight points in a 13-2 run over 4:02 to pull away to a 56-44 lead with 6:50 to play.  Eight of the Spiders' points came at the foul line, where UR connected on eight of 10 tries.
* JMU trailed by double-digits for most of the rest of the game.  The Dukes hit two three-pointers in the final 1:20 to get within six, 72-66, with 11.8 to play.
