HOFSTRA PULLS AWAY IN SECOND HALF FOR 68-48 WIN AT JMU

HARRISONBURG, Va., Feb. 3, 2010 – Hofstra used an 11-0 run to pull away from a tight game early in the second half and went on to defeat James Madison 68-48 in a Colonial Athletic Association game Wednesday night at the Convocation Center.

 

HU improved to 12-12 overall and 5-7 in the CAA while JMU dropped to 10-13 overall and 3-9 in the league. 

 

Hofstra led 30-25 at the break and 32-29 in the early minutes of the second half before the Pride went on an 11-0 run, holding JMU scoreless for four minutes and 51 seconds.  HU maintained a double-digit margin the rest of the way and outscored JMU 36-19 overall in the final 19 minutes en route to the 20-point victory.

 

Junior forward Denzel Bowles (Virginia Beach, Va./Kempsville) and sophomore forward Julius Wells (Toledo, Ohio/Libbey) shared team-high honors with 15 points apiece for JMU.  Wells added five boards and four assists.  Bowles was held to a season-low two rebounds while battling foul trouble.

 

Charles Jenkins finished with 20 points, five rebounds, four assists, and two steals for Hofstra.  Miklos Szabo was also in double figures with 12 points and eight boards.  Greg Washington had nine points and a game-high 12 rebounds.

 

JMU’s last lead came at 13-12 10 minutes into the ball game.  Hofstra responded with a 7-0 run to go up 19-13.  The Dukes pulled within one at 20-19 with 6:09 to go, but from that point never got any closer than the 32-29 mark with 19 minutes to go.

 

Hofstra shot 47.4% from the field despite hitting 26.7% (4-15) on three-point field goals.  JMU shot 34% from the floor and hit just two of its 16 three pointers.  Both teams made 10 of 15 free throws. 

 

The Pride held a 41-30 advantage in free throws, including a 25-13 margin in the second half.

 

JMU will be at Towson on Saturday at 4 p.m. for another CAA contest.
