HARRISONBURG, Va., April 14, 2010 - Sixth-seeded
James Madison travels to Norfolk, Va. this weekend to play in the Colonial
Athletic Association Men's Tennis Championships at the Folkes-Stevens Tennis
Center on the campus of Old Dominion.
JMU takes on third-seeded, and defending CAA champion, UNC Wilmington at
9 a.m. on Friday in the quarterfinals.
The Dukes won 11 of their final 14 matches
to finish the season with a 15-9 record and 3-5 in the CAA. Sophomore Tommi Nissinen (Oulu, Finland/Kastellin Lukio) was JMU's top
singles performer, going 25-9 overall and 18-6 playing at No. 3 during the
spring. Four times this season he put
together a winning streak of at least four matches, reaching a season-high of
seven. Senior Mike Smith (Fairfax Station, Va./Robinson) played No. 1 singles and
went 19-16. Freshmen Greg Vladimirsky (Coral Springs,
Fla./Broward Virtual) compiled a 20-11 mark at No. 2 while also going 18-11 in
doubles play.
Smith and junior Matt King (Lorton, Va./Robinson) handled top doubles duties for
Madison, going 13-8 during the spring and 23-10 overall. The duo was ranked as high as 38th nationally
during the spring play.
UNCW won the only match of the season
against JMU, winning 6-1 in Wilmington, N.C. on Feb. 28.
Opening round matches on Thursday feature
No. 7 Delaware taking on No. 10 Hofstra while No. 8 Drexel faces off with No. 9
George Mason. Top seed William and Mary
awaits the winner of Drexel/GMU, while second-seeded VCU takes on the
Delaware/Hofstra winner. No. 4 Old
Dominion takes on No. 5 Georgia State in the fourth quarterfinal match.
In last year's CAA Championships, No. 6 JMU
faced off with No. 3 W&M in the quarterfinals, losing 4-1.
The men's semifinals are set for 10 a.m. on
Saturday, with the winners advancing to the CAA Championship match at 10 a.m.
on Sunday.
