The James Madison football program will conduct a National Football League (NFL) "Pro Scout Day" on Friday (March 19). Several JMU players as well as prospects from other regional colleges are expected to display their skills.
The event will begin with a check-in for participants at 1:30 p.m. in the Plecker Athletic Performance Center adjacent to Bridgeforth Stadium on the JMU campus. The first portion of the evaluation will be in the weight room on the lower level of Plecker Center around 2 p.m. Athletes will weigh in and then be tested in vertical and broad jumps and the bench press.
Family members of the participants and agents are invited to the Plecker Center, but only JMU's senior participants and other invited players, JMU and visiting coaches and representatives from the NFL will be permitted in the weight room.
"It is great to have so many young men perform for the NFL scouts on our campus," said JMU head coach Mickey Matthews. "Unfortunately, due to limited space, liability and the number of participants expected, we have to restrict access to the weight room. I do want to invite everyone to the second part of the testing at the UREC field."
After the indoor tests, athletes will gather on the turf field directly behind the University Recreation Center (UREC) for tests that will consist of the 40- and 60-yard dash, the "L" drill, the shuttle and position drills, scheduled to begin around 3:15 p.m.
Among the JMU players expected to participate are Mike Caussin, Scotty McGee, Dorian Brooks and Arthur Moats.
Caussin of Springfield, Va. is one of the Dukes participating in the pro day tomorrow afternoon. Caussin is a big target at 6'5, 245 lbs. He finished his career with 66 receptions and 14 touchdowns. He was third-team All-CAA, and he hopes to impress scouts with not only his size, but his extension and ability to catch the football as well as his ability to stretch out the defensive vertically up the seams.
McGee from Virginia Beach, Va. is also scheduled to take part in the workouts on Friday afternoon. McGee, who worked out for the Jaguars in a private session on Monday, looks to continue to impress scouts with his special-teams play and his kick-return ability. In 2009 he was voted second-team All-CAA as a kick returner, punt returner, and cornerback. He finished the season with 41 tackles and 12 break-ups and had 640 kickoff return yards and 97 punt return yards. McGee received pre-season All-America first team specialist honors as a kick returner by The Sports Network. McGee who stands at 5'9', 190 lbs. has incredible speed and playmaking ability, although his size is something that could have a few scouts worrying about his ability to play at the next level.
Another Duke that will be participating in JMU's pro day is Brooks, a Richmond, Va. native. Brooks, like Moats also took part in the NFL combine in Indianapolis a few weeks ago. He, like his teammate, put up some impressive numbers especially in the shuttle and the 40-yard dash. Brooks received pre-season All-America second team honors as an offensive guard by The Sports Network and was a preseason All-CAA in 2009. He spent five years playing for the Dukes and started three of those seasons at guard for JMU.
Another of the Dukes that will participate is Moats. The Portsmouth, Va. native was the CAA's and the Football Championship Subdivision defensive player of the year and first-team All-CAA. He finished the season with 90 tackles, 23.5 tackles for loss, 11 sacks, and one fumble recovery for a touchdown. Moats, who participated in the NFL scouting, combine in Indianapolis a few weeks back, worked out for the Jaguars and Bengals on Tuesday and Wednesday, respectively.
Moats put up impressive numbers at the scouting combine and when asked how he's done so far he stated, "I feel I've performed well in the combine and in the personal workouts. I have gotten a lot of positive feedback about my performances, and I believe that can help my draft position as well as better my chance to play at the next level."
Moats is being looked at as a linebacker as well as a defensive end. When asked about the opportunity that was given because of the pro day, he responded by saying, "It's a great chance for me, just another chance for me to impress NFL scouts and coaches, I'm excited, I really am. I understand that with these workouts I may be given a chance to play in the NFL and that's like watching my dreams come true."
Players from Virginia Military Institute, Christopher Newport University and St. Paul's University, among others, are expected to attend.
Between 10-20 scouts are likely to attend.
