HARRISONBURG, Va., March 17, 2010 -- Dukes' women's basketball fans are invited to a send-off rally for the Dukes on Friday, March 19, as they depart for the NCAA Tournament in Norfolk, Va.
Fans are encouraged to be at entrance A of the JMU Convocation Center by 4:45 p.m. The team bus will leave Harrisonburg at 5 p.m.
The Colonial Athletic Association champion Dukes are seeded ninth in the Dayton region and will face eighth-seeded Temple Sunday in Norfolk, Va. Tip-off for the contest is 2:30 p.m., and the game will be televised on ESPN, ESPNU, and ESPN360.
The victor will advance to a March 23 second-round game (7 p.m.) to face the winner of No.1 Connecticut and No. 16 Southern.
Scouting Temple: The Temple Owls (24-8) received an at large NCAA bid for the fourth year in a row and are competing in the NCAA Tournament for the seventh consecutive season. The Owls lost 57-55 in overtime to Xavier in the Atlantic 10 Conference Tournament final on March 8.
Leading the Owls in scoring is 6-0 sophomore forward Kristen McCarthy, who averages 15.2 points per game. She is the fourth-leading scorer in the Atlantic 10. McCarthy had a career-high 42 points in a win over Charlotte in February. She is also the team's second-leading rebounder, averaging 6.1 rebounds per game. McCarthy was named to the All-Atlantic 10 first team this season.
Shaqwedia Wallace, a 5-9 junior guard, is the team's second-leading scorer, averaging 10.3 points per game.
Jasmine Stone, 6-3 senior forward, leads the team in rebounds (8.8).
LaKeisha Eaddy, a 5-7 senior guard, also earned All- Atlantic 10 honors this season. She was named to the A-10 third team and was an all-defensive team honoree. Eaddy leads the team in steals (2.1 avg.) and assists (3.6 avg.).
Head coach Tonya Cardoza, a 1991 graduate of Virginia, is in her second year at Temple. In her first year, she led the Owls to a 21-10 record and an NCAA at-large bid. Previously Cardoza was an assistant coach at Connecticut for 14 years and a part of five national championship teams.
Scouting JMU: The Dukes (26-6) received an automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament after beating Old Dominion 67-53 to win the CAA title at the JMU Convocation Center on Sunday.
Dawn Evans, a 5-7 junior guard, is the Dukes' leading scorer, averaging 24.8 points per game. This season she's received numerous honors, including WBCA State Farm All-Region 2, All-CAA first team and CAA Tournament Most Outstanding Player. Evans is a Wooden, Wade and Naismith award candidate for national Player of the Year.
Tarik Hislop, a 5-7 freshman guard, is the team's second-leading scorer, averaging 10.2 points. Hislop was named to the CAA all-rookie team
The Dukes' third-leading scorer is 6-4 junior center Lauren Jimenez, who averages 9.1 points per game. Jimenez was named to the CAA all-tournament team.
Sarah Williams, a 6-0 senior guard, is the team's leading rebounder, averaging 6.6 rebounds.
Not far behind Williams in rebounding is 6-3 junior center Jalissa Taylor (6.5).
Eighth-year head coach Kenny Brooks has a career record of 172-78. This marks the fifth straight year that the Dukes have appeared in postseason play but is their first NCAA tournament appearance since 2007.
