NORFOLK, Va., Oct. 4, 2009 - The James Madison men's tennis team won the A and B doubles flights as well as the B-2 singles flight at this weekend's Old Dominion Invitational in Norfolk, Va.
Doubles partners senior Mike Smith (Fairfax Station, Va./Robinson) and junior Matt King (Lorton, Va./Robinson) won the A doubles draw, while junior Jared Robinson (Johannesburg, South Africa/St. Stithians) and freshman Greg Vladimirsky (Coral Springs, Fla./Broward Virtual) teamed up to take the B draw. Vladimirsky also went 4-0 in the B-2 singles draw to take that title for the Dukes.
Coming off a doubles championship two weeks ago in the Georgetown Invitational, Smith and King continued their solid play, opening with an 8-3 win over Kevon Charles and Eric Ward of Morgan State. The duo won their quarterfinals match over Camill Salomon and C.J. Williams of VCU before moving to the championship with an 8-2 win over Illja Orre and Jamie Whiteford of William & Mary. In the finals, Smith and King downed Delaware's Gokay Celik and Austin Longacre 8-4.
Not to be out done, Robinson and Vladimirsky marched to the B flight championship, dropping just 13 games in four matches. The partners opened with back-to-back 8-3 wins over Arsenio Culver and Ben Marks of Norfolk State and Calle Lundquist and Diego Abreu of the New Jersey Institute of Technology. Robinson and Vladimirsky moved to the finals with an 8-4 win over Varun Pandit and Richard Wardell of William & Mary ahead of an 8-3 win in the championship over Louis Steyn and Ben Wirth of Liberty.
Vladimisky made it a combined 8-0 for the tournament, sweeping matches against Dmitry Chekhlatyy (Morgan State), Dorian Sovic (Coastal Carolina), Chris Hincker (Delaware) and Alex Hanno (Villanova) to claim his singles title.
Fellow freshman Stephen Hardy (Fairfax, Va./Robinson) also played well for the Dukes, winning two of his three matches in the C-1 singles to advance to the semifinals. Hardy opened with a 6-1, 6-4 win over Andrew Adler of Villanova in the opening round, before a 6-3, 2-6, 1-0 (8) victory over Camilo Perez over Delaware. East Carolina's Massimo Mannino put a stop to Hardy's charge with a 6-2, 7-5 victory in the semifinals.
Hardy combined with sophomore Tommi Nissinen (Oulu, Finland/Kastellin Lukio) to pick up a pair of wins in doubles play before an injury forced the duo to withdraw in the finals of the flight C doubles bracket.
JMU's final doubles team, sophomores Jovan Milic (Belgrade, Serbia/Belgrade Sports School) and Ville Maaranen (Joensuu, Finland/Joensuun Lukio) won their opening round match against Drexel before falling in the quarterfinals against Ondej Kralik and Loukas Wallmart of Campbell.
Smith picked up two wins in singles play, while the Dukes also got singles wins from Milic, King and Robinson.
JMU will wrap up its 2009 fall schedule in three weeks when they travel back to Norfolk for the Atlantic Wilson/ITA Division I Regional Championships.
