WASHINGTON, D.C., Sept. 21, 2009 -- The JMU men's tennis team continued its 2009 fall schedule in Washington D.C. last weekend as they traveled to Georgetown University for the Georgetown Invitational.
The Dukes top doubles team of senior Mike Smith (Fairfax Station, Va./Robinson) and Matt King (Lorton, Va./Robinson) went 3-0 in the event to take claim the doubles title. Smith and King opened up the event with an 8-2 win over Georgetown's David Tillem and Tim Walsh, before advancing to the finals with an 8-4 win over Zach Gorn and Jason Magnes of the University of Pennsylvania. In the finals, the All-CAA duo took down Ugur Atalay and Erik Hannah of George Washington.
Smith also advanced to the finals of the consolation draw but fell to sophomore teammate Tommi Nissinen (Oulu, Finland/Kastellin Lukio) in three sets. Smith reached the finals with a 6-4, 6-1 victory over Lucas Andreika of Penn.
Nissinen went 4-1 in the event, losing his opening-round match to George Washington's Ken Mkrtchian before bouncing back with wins over Eric Chavous of Howard, Smith, Dmitri Bury of Penn and Gorn. The sophomore downed Gorn 6-1, 6-2 in the finals.
The Dukes also received wins in singles play from sophomores Jovan Milic (New Belgrade, Serbia/Belgrade Sports School) and Ville Maaranen (Joensuu, Finland/Joensuun Lukio). Milic beat Bury 6-3, 3-6, 6-1 in the main draw, while Maaranen down Howard's Omar Halloui 6-0, 6-3 in the consolation draw.
The men's tennis team will return to action Oct. 2-4 at the Old Dominion Invitational in Norfolk, Va.
